How do I prevent long URLs on OpenID comments from breaking my layout?

When a comment is left using an OpenID, but the commenters name is not provided, the OpenID URL will be displayed alongside the comment.  If the URL is rather long (especially true with some Yahoo! OpenIDs), it may cause unexpected problems with your WordPress theme.  There are two main approaches to addressing this:

Truncate long URLs

 - substr() on get_comment_author

Wrap long URLs

- via CSS (word-wrap) - works in Safari, IE, Firefox 3.1

- via <wbr/> - works in most browsers, but not XHTML
